Over 4 million pairs of eyeglasses are donated each year, and each pair has a story. While the outcome of each pair of glasses it not always known, the following photos and captions outline the journey of a pair of eyeglasses.

A person donates glasses at her local library.
A box of used eyeglasses is poured out for sorting at the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center in Muncie, Indiana,USA.
Volunteers sort the used eyeglasses, separating sunglasses, broken frames and single lenses from intact pairs.

The prescription of the glasses is determined by the lensometer.

Glasses are cleaned and then packaged according to their prescription.
Prepared glasses are stored in the warehouse until they are requested for an eyeglasses dispensing mission.
Volunteers sort glasses in preparation for the first day of the mission.
Hundreds of people wait in line to have their eyes examined and receive a pair of eyeglasses.
A recipient patiently waits his turn.
The recipient has his hand numbered for ease in going through the various stations.
Lion John Clester performs the first eye test on the recipient using a spoon to cover one eye and a simple wall eye chart.
The recipient has his eyes tested using an auto refractor.
The recipient is fitted with the bifocals that were donated at the library (above). After a few adjustments, he is able to read clearly for the first time in years.
The glasses will help the recipient maintain employment, allowing him to continue to support his family.
